Kick Off Your Shoes — Literally — At Everlane’s New Pop-Up

As the once-narrow concept of the retail experience has exploded in recent years, there's been a spate of stores that purport to be something else entirely. We've seen the shop as art gallery, the shop as chicly curated apartment, and even the shop as restaurant. Everlane, the minimalist online fashion purveyor which has no stores to speak of, has launched two immersive pop-ups in New York this year that continue the trend.

Kelly Behun x Barneys: A Patterned Pop-Up, Where Maximalism Prevails

For Barneys New York, Kelly Behun and her team have created an immersive pop-up and capsule collection, on view through October 31st, that translates the studio's super graphic design aesthetic into a collection of items for the home. Called A Kook Milieu, the pop-up was inspired in part by the pattern and decoration–obsessed 1970s New York gallerist Holly Solomon, who was known for blurring the line between art and design.

Commune’s New West Elm Collection is a Study in California Cool

The American Trade Hotel in Panama, the Ace in Palm Springs, Heath Ceramics in San Francisco — for more than a decade, Commune has been the design firm behind these kinds of universally loved — and mega-Instagrammed — interiors. Slightly more under-the-radar are the Los Angeles studio's frequent furniture and object collaborations, which over the years have included everything from concrete tiles and rust-colored sofas to room fragrances and fireplace tools. But their latest collaboration brings Commune's distinct brand of California cool to the masses.

A Cult Milan Design Destination Gets Its Twice-Yearly Makeover

Here's something we're not sure why more stores aren't doing: Twice a year, the Milanese multi-brand furniture showroom Spotti gives over its entire space to longtime collaborators — and one of our favorite styling duos — Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto of Studiopepe to remake however they see fit. This summer, the duo has created a interior called Instant Panorama for Spotti's renovated space — inspired, no doubt, by our Instagram-obsessed culture — that's set up in vignettes that are meant to be captured on film.

A Must-Visit Design Store in Melbourne

Guild of Objects fills an interesting gap in Melbourne — a store that isn’t quite a gallery, but is far from a gift shop. Each object — handmade by an Australian maker and often one-of-a-kind — has a story behind it. Quality materials and an emphasis on craftsmanship are central to each piece — otherwise they wouldn’t be here.

In Paris, the Anti-French Jewelry Boutique

Here's something we never thought we'd be covering on this site: A French jewelry boutique. The very idea seems too fussy for our forward-thinking aesthetic, calling to mind things like porcelain reliefs, gilded displays, and grand spiral staircases. But the new Repossi flagship in Paris's Place Vendôme, designed by Dutch architects OMA, contains precisely none of those things.

A Wallpaper That Lets You Cover Your Walls With Kaleidoscopic Spraypaint

When the New York design showroom Colony presented new work by its roster of emerging talents during design week this past May, the furniture wasn't the only highlight — several of the space's carefully styled object vignettes were backdropped by rainbows of hyper-color ombre splatter-paint that we zeroed in on immediately, assuming they were an artful site-specific flourish applied by someone who knew their way around a spray can. Not so: They were actually panels of large-scale, non-repeating wallpaper by Brooklyn's Flat Vernacular, in a new pattern called The Heavens.

New, Super-Graphic Housewares from MPGMB

Montreal duo Maude Beauchamp and Marie-Pier Guilmain of MPGMB may be responsible for one of our favorite necklaces in the Sight Unseen Shop, but they also have a thriving housewares line — in 2014, they released the Arizona Collection of stoneware planters perched atop wood-fiber stands, and now they've released a new summer series inspired by some of its design elements.
