Is This New, Gleaming Bookstore in Hangzhou the Future of Books?

We marvel at pretty much every bookstore brave enough to open in today's retail landscape, but that goes double for the new Harbook shop in Hangzhou, designed by the Shanghai studio of Alberto Caiola. A sprawling 6,500 square-foot playground filled with monumental custom furnishings and rows of thick steel archways, it's almost touching in how it seems to channel the glory days of the early 2000s, when ambitious "concept stores" still flourished and Amazon hadn't yet ruined books for everyone else.

Luca Guadagnino’s First Interior Design Project is an Ochre Mansion on Lake Como (Because Of Course It Is)

Pretty much every design person we know has been obsessed with the Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino since I Am Love, the Tilda Swinton movie shot primarily on location at the Villa Necchi, a Piero Portaluppi–designed home in the middle of Milan that's something of a design-world touchstone. So it's no surprise that there was a general freakout this weekend when T Magazine published Guadagnino's inaugural experiment in interior design.

Dontworrybaby, a Used Bookstore in Austin, is the Ad Hoc Interior We Need Right Now

These days, we spend so much time looking at interiors that boast the perfect Hay sofa, or the just-right Vitsoe shelves, that it can be easy to forget how wonderful anonymous furniture can be. Lucky for us, Austin-based stylist Margaret Williamson Bechtold remembered this when she was sourcing display pieces for her used bookstore Dontworrybaby, which opened in an abandoned cement factory on Austin's East Side earlier this summer.

For our ongoing curatorial takeover of The A/D/O Shop in Brooklyn, we'll be doing periodic showcases of a single studio's work, in addition to all of the other amazing offerings you can buy on site. Our first showcase, which launches tomorrow, puts the spotlight on Brooklyn-based trio Pieces Home. Pieces launched a sports-themed collection at this year's ICFF, and at A/D/O, they'll be offering select furniture and rugs from that line as well as a brand-new series of geometric planters.

See How Hawkins New York’s Founders Transformed a 1750s Farmhouse Into a Colorful, Modern Home

Hawkins started out primarily producing work for other designers, including Workstead, Alyson Fox, MINNA, and Slowood Studio, but the brand now specializes in simple, elevated basics designed in-house — think enameled bowls, recycled glassware, insanely chic dustpans (it's a thing), and super-saturated waffle towels. But most of the pieces have evolved from a need in Denoly and Blaine's own home, which they bought in seriously dilapidated fashion almost five years ago and have been working on ever since.
