We’ve Added a Dozen Items to Our Newly Revamped Shop!

Maybe it's the seven-year itch, but after a long period of subtle changes, this summer we decided to go all-out in revamping the online shop we've been running since 2010, adding almost a dozen new items by some of our favorite housewares and jewelry designers — with a dozen more on the way between now and fall.

We Paired Norwegian Studios with American Studios to Collaborate on New Works

In 2016, Sight Unseen’s editors created a cross-cultural exchange called Norway x New York, pairing 5 American studios with 5 Norwegian studios, who spent six months working together long-distance on objects that utilize an American workshop for fabrication. After a successful debut at Sight Unseen OFFSITE last year, Norway x New York has returned this week with an all-new collection of collaborative furniture, lighting, and accessories, pictured after the jump.

This Curator Turned Her 12th-Century Castle Into a Design Gallery

After Alice Stori Lichtenstein moved into her family's 12th-century castle, Schloss Hollenegg, she turned her sprawling, grandiose home (or a small sliver of it, anyway) into a residency program and exhibition space. Earlier this month, she opened the show Morphosis, focusing on "the manner in which an organism or any of its parts changes form or undergoes development," and featuring objects by Lex Pott, Stephanie Hornig, Sabine Marcelis, Germans Ermics, Marcin Rusak, and more. Bid on Works By Design’s Biggest Names in Our First Design for Progress Auction

The day after the election in November, we launched Design For Progress, a fundraising initiative meant as a call to action for the design community to rally behind progressive causes. Today we're launching the first-ever Design For Progress auction on Paddle8, featuring 40 contemporary design objects by talents like Bower and Lindsey Adelman and benefitting the ACLU, Run for Something, Sierra Club, and Campaign Legal Center. Get involved by bidding, or just by helping spread the word.

This Studio’s First Collection Is Inspired By Drinking and Fast Cars

You'd think that the new graphics and furniture studio Hey, Porter were based in Monte Carlo or St. Tropez based on the descriptions they've given their first designs: chairs inspired by the "1st running of the 24-Hour Le Mans Automobile Race in France," bar carts named after a "cunning craft cocktail ace from 19th-century London." Alas, their backstory is not quite as dramatic as their influences would suggest — but we're still intrigued.

If You Love Music and Minimalist Interiors, Read This

If you tried to give one of us a huge, tech-y looking subwoofer that clashed with our vintage B&B Italia sectionals, we'd laugh you right out of the room. That, in a nutshell, is what we love about Sonos: Their speakers are designed not to stand out, but to blend in with and complement your minimalist interior. And that's why their newly launched White Sub — the understated square object you see in between Jill's copper Yield planter and hand-carved James Carroll ladder above — isn't fancy- or crazy-looking, it's just... white.

In Masquespacio's latest project, the Spanish consultancy was charged with redesigning the identity and reinventing four products for the Barcelonan lighting brand Raco — as well as designing their own — infusing the Spanish lighting brand with a new sense of cool.

New, Super-Graphic Housewares from MPGMB

Montreal duo Maude Beauchamp and Marie-Pier Guilmain of MPGMB may be responsible for one of our favorite necklaces in the Sight Unseen Shop, but they also have a thriving housewares line — in 2014, they released the Arizona Collection of stoneware planters perched atop wood-fiber stands, and now they've released a new summer series inspired by some of its design elements.

These Mirrors Will Make You Question the Meaning of Humanity

Chen Chen and Kai Williams's new Mirror Masks for Areaware are clearly just flat slabs of industrially produced glass printed with a few simple shapes. And yet somehow they ooze emotion — that's how strongly our brains are wired to read the feelings that lie behind facial expressions. To underscore that dichotomy, Areaware's art director Elsa Brown hired the up-and-coming Brooklyn artist Carson Fisk-Vittori to take the mirrors to Mexico City, then shoot evocative photographs of them in various settings around town.
