At Europe’s Newest Design Fair, We’re Presenting New Work by Chen and Kai and Mimi Jung

This winter, we're building on a very exciting trajectory that began with our presence at two Collective Design Fairs in New York, and continued when we presented the work of 13 American studios at the London Design Fair this past fall. From March 8 to 11, Sight Unseen will have a booth at the brand-new Collectible design fair, in Brussels, where we'll showcase new lighting by Chen Chen and Kai Williams and new woven works by Mimi Jung.

At The Future Perfect, Bec Brittain’s SHY Lights Grow Up

Bec Brittain has been playing with different configurations of her constellation-like SHY Lights ever since they debuted all the way back in 2012. But because each light is constricted only by the width and length of an LED tube, as well as Brittain's own boundless imagination, the possibilities are quite literally endless. So for a new show at The Future Perfect, called Resolute, Brittain began experimenting with the path and quality of the light source itself rather than the configuration of the tubes.

Brutalist- and Bauhaus-Inspired Housewares and Lighting From the Duo Behind Material Lust

Christian Swafford and Lauren Larson, the creative couple behind Material Lust, introduced their sister brand Orphan Work humbly enough, with a soft launch last year that had us wondering what, exactly, the brand even was. But since its debut, the label has evolved beyond its origins as “an exploration of orphaned material” and developed into a full-fledged brand: lighting, accessories, and what they call “monuments for your tabletop,” inspired at turns by Bauhaus and Brutalism, but mainly by the Vienna Secession.

This Heath Ceramics Alum Just Made the Chicest Salt Lamp We’ve Ever Seen

A little more than a decade ago, when Christina Zamora was just an art-school grad living in the Bay Area, she landed a job that would go on to inform her life and her practice in immeasurable ways: She became a designer for Heath Ceramics, the midcentury California pottery brand whose early-2000s revival coincided with Zamora's tenure there. "I was surrounded by her way of thinking and working every single day. This experience had a profound impact on how I approach design." That becomes clear from the moment you encounter the first product made by Zamora's year-old, Oakland-based studio, Brave Matter.

Take a Tour of Our 2017 Sight Unseen OFFSITE Show, Part I

Conventional wisdom suggests that for an event to be considered truly successful, it's supposed to get bigger every year. But here at Sight Unseen, we've always put curation before commerce, and so when we began pondering back in October whether Sight Unseen OFFSITE might benefit from a tighter, smaller, more elevated edit, we had no qualms whatsoever about scaling down. Whereas in 2016 we hosted more than 70 exhibitors in 20,000 square feet, our 2017 show featured just 25 exhibitors in 13,000 square feet — and yet it was widely credited as being the best we've ever done.

Our 2017 Show Is Open For Business!

Our fourth annual Sight Unseen OFFSITE officially opens for business today at noon! Please come by the ground floor of 100 Avenue of the Americas in Soho to check out new furniture, lighting, ceramics, and objects by 24 of our favorite independent designers and brands — from Iacoli & McAllister to Atelier de Troupe, Home Studios to Elyse Graham — plus a virtual-reality interiors experience by Tom Hancocks for the online art purveyor Twyla, an interactive installation by The Principals and Calico Wallpaper, two up-and-coming talents presented by Levi's Made and Crafted, a lounge by West Elm, and a group exhibition curated by Sight Unseen that features the work of 25 amazing international designers. Remember when New York Design Week was, well, a week? This year, the festival known as NYCxDesign stretches all the way from May 3 through May 24, making this a marathon for those involved, as we are, in both design and art.
