For a New Artist Residency, Five Up-And-Coming Studios Remake a Traditional House in Greece

For 4Rooms, an artist residency on the tiny Greek island of Kastellorizo, Società delle Api’s Silvia Fiorucci, alongside Salone del Mobile editorial director Annalisa Rosso, tapped four up-and-coming designers — Studio Brynjar & Veronika, Phanos Kyriacou, Julie Richoz, and UND.studio — to totally make over one room of the house each, with the French studio Superpoly taking over the common areas (including the excellent kitchen, above).

Berlin Startup Raus Is Building Designer Cabins in the Woods that Let Tired City-Dwellers Become One With Nature

With its 170 square-foot bookable designer cabins, German startup Raus lets its guests leave the craziness of the city behind to experience being separated from endless trees and sky by a mere sliver of glass (without giving up the comforts of a proper mattress and shower). Its founders created the first few cabins themselves, negotiating deals with farmers outside Berlin to park the off-the-grid structures on their land, then commissioned architect Sigurd Larsen to envision model 2.0, which debuted this past spring.

This Agnes Martin–Inspired Boutique Takes Nude Tones to New Levels

“A performance by Vanessa Beecroft or a painting by Agnes Martin” are comparisons that Studiopepe founders Ariana Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto make to their boutique for fashion curator Avart — by which they mean it’s calming and welcoming, but with a strong, proud presence. Located under the arcade of Lugano’s Via Canova, the interior takes nude tones to new levels through micro-sand surfaces that blanket the walls, floors, ceiling, and a helical staircase that provides a sculptural focal point for the store.

Tour the Incredible 1930s and 40s Gio Ponti Interiors Hidden in a 13th-Century Italian University

Between 1934 and 1942, Gio Ponti decorated numerous rooms inside Palazzo Bo — home to the University of Padua, founded in the 13th century — creating one of his most important works in interior design. In fact, the 1940s were critical for Ponti's transformation from his previous styles of Novecento Italiano and Rationalism toward softer mid-century design, which became his trademark after the Second World War. Meet the Duo Making Psychedelic-Patterned Ceramic Tiles With a Machine They Built Themselves

Back in 2017, best friends Gilles de Brock and Jaap Giesen decided they wanted to make patterned ceramic tiles. They knew nothing about tiles or ceramics, but driven blindly by passion for the idea, they spent more than three years developing their own CNC glaze-printer — and accommodating its peculiarities within their design process — until they were finally able to launch Palet tiles earlier this year, offering an array of customizable tiles in bold colors that feature a signature psychedelic ombré look.

A Whimsical Parisian Shoe Store By One of France’s Biggest Up-and-Coming Talents

Sophie Dries's design for the Michel Vivien store is relatively simple, in that it centers around a 50-foot-long undulating walnut wood wall pierced with glass and wooden floating shelves. But it is the art and objects — abstract, totem-like sculptures, stools by Pierre Chapo used as pediments for displaying shoes, plush velvet seating, and lighting by Jacques Biny and Charlotte Perriand — and the way she artfully arranges them that make the space so interesting.
