This New Exhibition Invites Artists and Designers to Reconsider a Classic Wedding Object

I got married a few months ago, and while it was by no means a traditional affair, there were of course moments and objects we incorporated into the ceremony that held historical meaning and significance. Something we didn’t include? (Admittedly because we’d never heard of it before?) The Loving Cup, a decorative vessel historically used at wedding banquets to commemorate a union, with two handles — one for each partner — and an inscription with the date and names of the couple. This endearing symbol of love and good fortune is the subject of an exhibition at New York’s Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery, where contemporary interpretations of these vessels by an interesting selection of artists and design talents are displayed alongside a host of historic artifacts.

This New LA Music HQ Mixes Warm Woods and Cool Metals Like Nothing We’ve Seen

Normally we would say that an office doesn't have any business looking this good. But Ceremony of Roses — whose new offices were designed by Dean Levin of the LA studio 22RE in collaboration with Madeline Denley of Never Far Studios — is the merch and branding arm of Sony Music, and as such has a constant stream of global talents coming through, from Adele to Olivia Rodrigo (whose merch, we would argue, is impeccable.) The office is housed in a former 1950s factory in Culver City, and it bears several signatures we've come to associate with Levin's up-and-coming studio: a 1970s-influenced aesthetic that preferences elements like wall-to-wall carpeting in lush tones, beautifully monolithic metal expanses, and hits of coolly minimalist vintage furniture.

RIP Design Legend Ingo Maurer, Who Was More Relevant Than Ever

In a strange twist of fate, we had a story on the recent resurgence of legendary lighting designer Ingo Maurer on our calendar for today, even before we'd heard of his passing at the age of 87. We had of course followed Maurer's work over the course of our 15 years in the design world, but we had never gone in for Maurer's more purposefully kitschy designs. But to focus solely on those works is ignore Maurer's sheer breadth of output, and to dismiss a collection of his lights that has recently begun to feel more contemporary and relevant than ever.
