These Colorful, Hand-Crafted Rugs Honor Mexico’s Lost Traditions

We keep coming back to these playful, colorful rug designs by the brand-new Barcelona-based company Rrres, which was started by Javier Reyes, a graphic designer from the Dominican Republic. The rugs are made with artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico, and are decorated with graphic, glyph-like symbols — although his more recent designs, which we're featuring here today, incorporate abstraction and curves.

A Swedish Artist’s Gravity-Defying Stone Sculptures

Swedish artist Malou Palmqvist's wabi-sabi stacks of organic shapes are a studied interpretation of the scattered pieces of waste that wash ashore near her home in the Swedish archipelago. The textured forms — stoneware, wood carvings, and combinations of stone with plaster to create a marbled effect — are at once hefty and delicate, subtly clashing and full of whimsy.

A South African Showroom With a Perfect, Pink Tiled Facade

Little is known about the history of 99 Juta Street — an 80-odd year old multi-use development in Johannesburg that was recently brought back to life by designers Dokter and Misses in collaboration with architects Local Studio; the original plans were lost, and with them, any record of the building's original use or exact age. When work began, 99 Juta was in disrepair and concealed behind a fiber cement cladding; now it boasts a poppy, tiled, Art Deco facade in pink and emerald green, as well as four showrooms and office spaces for various design brands and two inner courtyards that create a through line of color and intrigue.

Touring Mexico City With One of Our Favorite Architectural Photographers

The Coolest Booth in Stockholm Was for a Vinyl Flooring Company

While it's not exactly news that formerly uncool materials can be made to look beautiful and sophisticated, it's perhaps never been done as well or on as large a scale as it was this week at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, in a booth Note Design Studio created for the French flooring company Tarkett. Called the Lookout, the booth was made from a mix of wood, textiles, linoleum and a vinyl flooring material called iQ Megalit; the trick was in employing Note's frequent use of geometry and a tight, tonal color palette of rust, coral, apricot, moss green, and mint.

Moody, Limited-Edition Pieces By a Brand-New Berlin Design Collective

Three years ago, at a café in Berlin, three friends — Joern Scheipers, David Kosock, and Bart Navarra — came up with the idea to channel their love for art and design into creating furniture. Their friendship — and their backgrounds in fashion, branding, and architecture — finally coalesced last year into VAUST, an experimental furniture and interiors studio whose first collection launched earlier this month at Der Berliner Salon.

A Dutch Duo’s Albers-Inspired Acrylic Boxes

Over the past few weeks, we've been working on a little project about Josef Albers, so the idea that color might function as a material has been front and center in our minds. And perhaps no contemporary studio's work has pushed color into as defining a role as the Dutch duo Raw Color. Their latest project, a series of acrylic boxes whose multicolored planes intersect and blend into one other, is one of their best to date and pushes color even further into Albers territory.

A Pastel-Hued Parisian Hotel is Our Newest Design Destination

The headboards should have been a dead giveaway: At the new Hotel Bienvenue in Paris, the asymmetrical, velvet-trimmed, tone-on-tone headboards — mixed with statement-y, wall-hung iron sconces — are the focal point in each room, just as they are in another Parisian boutique hotel we recently featured. Turns out they are owned by the same young hotelier, but designed by two different, equally amazing female talents.

We Spent Two Months With 12 Artists in a Tuscan Paradise

When you tell people that you just got back from a two-month stay in a 19th-century Tuscan villa with three swimming pools where you had your own artist's studio and a gourmet chef cooking you dinner every night, the first thing they tend to do is giggle: It sounds like you're making it up. But the Villa Lena is no fairy tale, it's a very real place with a very real residency program that we participated in this summer, and documented here with the help of Berlin art director Sarah Illenberger.

Melbourne Creative Agency Wildhen Design

We've said it before — Australia often feels like a strange parallel universe to us. We know it's bursting with amazing design talent, but it all feels so far away, and it's not easy for us to assess what the new hot restaurant or hotel or creative agency may be at any given time. For those of us who pride ourselves on being up on the cultural landscape of the Western hemisphere, it's a weird feeling, but in a way, it's also a nice one: We didn't have to think too hard when the Melbourne firm Wildhen sent us their portfolio recently, we just poked through it and objectively liked what we saw, from packaging for a boutique pharmacy to still life shoots for an online nursery.
