The Swiss Artist Turning Photographs and Digital Renderings Into High-End Carpets

Growing up in the '90s in Switzerland, Nadja Stäubli always had an analog camera with her. "I ended up studying photography at the University of Arts in Switzerland, and, for my thesis project, I wanted to work with a different medium then simple photography," explains the founder of the cult-favorite rug company Schoenstaub. Stäubli dug around to find a high-density weaving machine that could translate the grain of her 35mm film into knots on a rug, and, through family connections, ended up finding the only one that could do it in the world. The idea was to produce a single carpet for a gallery; it was such a success, Stäubli decided to turn the enterprise into a full-fledged company.

The fourth in a series of annual exhibitions put forth by Design and Architecture Norway (DOGA), Klubben (the Norwegian designers’ union), and Norwegian Crafts, this year's show is divided into three, with each part celebrating the country’s designers, craft artists, and manufacturers, respectively — essentially, every element of the country’s making community.

The Cape Town Artist Making 3D Renders of Our Personal Paradise

Five years ago, Alexis Christodoulou was a copywriter at an ad agency, hating his job and looking for some sort of creative release. Intrigued by a friend using SketchUp, the 3D-modeling program, Christodoulou taught himself how to use it and a whole new world suddenly opened for the Cape Town–based artist. Obsessed, he began putting all of his time into these renderings — desaturated, pastel worlds full of reflective pools, strong shapes, and the best kind of shadow-making light.

We first fell in love with the bright, geometric designs of up-and-coming Australian designer Elliot Bastianon when we spotted his Donald Judd–esque acoustic paneled bench a few years back. His latest works, on display this month at M2 Gallery in Sydney (reminding us yet again that now would be a perfect time for an Australian vacation), maintain the designer's strong linear emphasis and poppy use of color.

Turns out now I can do that with my furniture too: The new collection from Copenhagen’s Studio David Thulstrup — who teamed up with the newly relaunched Danish design company Møbel Copenhagen — is inspired by circular geometry and typography weights.

Three years ago, at a café in Berlin, three friends — Joern Scheipers, David Kosock, and Bart Navarra — came up with the idea to channel their love for art and design into creating furniture. This Up-And-Coming Italian Designer is A Master of Materials

Looking like glossy collages left too long in the sun, Strata — a collection of glass plates and lamps by Venetian designer Lucia Massari for Swing Design Gallery — are vibrant, delicate, and weirdly fun. Massari fuses differently colored flat sheets of glass in an oven, and the results teeter between two and three dimensions. Sticking with a few neutrals and a pop of color or two — yellows, violets, and blues — the casual overlapping of smooth ovals, chunky grids, and basic rectangles create unexpected, but harmonious, geometric textures.

A Collection of Glass Objects, Inspired By Water In All Its Forms

Two years ago, the Turkish glass manufacturer Pasabahçe teamed up with a collection of designers and glass artists to create Omnia, a series that channeled Anatolian culture through modern glass objects. Now they are reviving the concept — this time focused around the theme of water and in partnership with the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association — with 15 designers, primarily Turkish, plus the Paris-based SCMP Design Office, whose collection we're featuring here today.
