At This Wood-Clad Seaside Retreat, Iconic Scandinavian Lights Pair Perfectly With California Modernism
The Danish company Louis Poulsen is home to some of the world’s most instantly recognizable lighting, designed by the greats: Poul Henningsen’s mid-century classics, like his layered 1958 Artichoke pendant; Verner Panton’s domed Panthella floor and table lamps, their form so oft-copied you forget Panton was the first to do it; Arne Jacobsen’s perfectly slanted AJ desk lamp; and the translucent drop of the 1940s-era VL45 Radiohus pendant by Vilhelm Lauritzen. While all distinctively Scandinavian — there’s a certain precision and integrity combined with a playful inventiveness that’s somehow simultaneously cool and warm — these lights also work particularly well in the context of a West Coast golden-hour glow, the interplay of sun and soft shadows. Louis Poulsen’s sculptural yet clean aesthetic naturally dovetails with the indoor-outdoor architecture of California modernism — both of which have been captured in a new interiors shoot styled and photographed by Lumens, a key distributor of Louis Poulsen in North America. (They’re sister brands, under the Flos B&B Italia Group umbrella).
Lumens, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, has been bringing international lighting to American audiences for two decades, offering both a point of view and a deep bench of designers — which aligns well with Louis Poulsen, a brand that has successfully mixed different eras into a cohesive vision over time, and where contemporary designers often mingle with icons. But Lumens drew from another source of inspiration as well when envisioning the interior spaces of this eco-modern home perched high above the Northern Californian coastline: Sea Ranch, the beloved, utopian-Modern planned community on the wild edge of Sonoma County.
Like Sea Ranch, this home is clad inside and out with locally sourced wood and enjoys a year-round moodiness thanks to an abundance of natural light filtered through the oversized windows. In the kitchen, two pear-shaped color-blocked Cirque pendants by Clara von Zweigbergk pair with the flying saucer body of Henningsen’s PH5 pendant, now available in a new Dusty Indigo finish that just debuted on the Lumens site. In the study, the setting sun glints off of Jacobsen’s AJ desk lamp, newly available in a shiny chrome finish. And in the garden, Peter Bysted’s bollard lights illuminate a walkway that leads to Henningsen’s tiered outdoor wall sconces. It’s the spirit of West Coast modernism blended with 150 years of Danish design excellence, and it’s the stuff of our Scandi-Cali dreams.
